Multi-dosing
Technology
The Multi-Dose dispensing system is a recent innovation in the health
care industry. Currently, we are the market leader in Ontario and Alberta, providing
multi-dose prescriptions to LTCFs.
In Multi-Dose dispensing,
all oral solid dose medications suitable for packaging are placed in a
plastic envelope and heat sealed. Each envelope is clear on one side and
opaque on the other. The opaque side is for patient information and administration
instructions. Medications for a specific medication pass (up to a maximum
of four different medications) are packaged in the same envelope. Incompatible
or additional medications for that pass time are packaged separately.
The envelopes are supplied in a seven-day dosage cycle, sorted chronologically
by day and time.
Benefits
of Multi-Dose Technology
Multi-Dose saves up to 35% of nursing medication preparation time over
blister cards. In two separate studies, the multi-dose packaging system
was found to save 20-35% of nursing medication preparation over blister
cards. One study showed that the time savings was used in doubling the
time spent in resident care and doubling the time spent with other health
professionals (i.e., doctors, pharmacists, and other nurses).
Multi-Dose
Reduces Medication Errors By up to 8%
In a scientific study, blister card drug distribution systems were found
to have an inherent 8% error rate. When switched to a multi-dose drug
distribution system, error rates typically fell to less than 1%.
Government
Stock is Multi-Dose Packaged to Reduce Risk and Save Time
Because our packaging system is automated, government stock (i.e., enteric
coated A.S.A., ferrous gluconate, etc.) can be unit dosed packaged for
the facility. This reduces the risk associated with using stock bottles
and saves nursing time involved with the pouring of medications.
Leave-of-Absence
Medications Requires No Nursing Preparation
Because of the unique unit-dose packaging format, nurses do not have to
prepare leave-of-absence medications. Each unit-dose package is clearly
labeled so that patients and residents may self-administer their medications
while away from the facility.
Medication
Reordering
Scheduled medications are sent automatically through our unique computer
tracking system, thus minimizing staff required for reordering. Other
refill orders are processed using MediSystems efficient piggy-back
labeling system.
