What
does your pharmacy service do that sets it apart from other long-term
care providers?
Using multi-dose technology, we package medication in individual plastic
packets, which are linked end to end. Each packet contains all of your
medication for a specific time of day. This ensures that all of the residents'
medications are taken at the correct time, thereby eliminating any missed
or late doses. In short, the system is safer, more efficient and much
more compliant.
Digital pen technology allows the pharmacy to view the physician's order moments after it has been written.
What
are the costs to the residents who use your system?
In Ontario, the costs to the resident, is the Ontario Drug Benefit's standard dispensing
co-payment of $2.00 or $6.11, depending on the current level. That means
that we charge the co-payment per month, per prescription. If the doctor
changes the strength of the medication during that month we would not
charge an additional co-payment. We can also include supplements the resident
may want in their packets; that is left up to the individual. Medications
that the Government does not pay for will be filled at the cost of the
medication plus a professional fee, or the over-the-counter retail price.
If the resident lives in a registered nursing home or a home for the aged,
the co-payment is $2.00 per prescription, per month, regardless of his/her
income level.
How
do long-term care facilities benefit from getting the MediSystem Pharmacy
medication distribution system?
The most obvious and beneficial difference is that of reduction of pass
times. Long-term care facilities see a real time saving of 25-35%. depending
on the nursing expertise. Additional time savings are realized because of elimination of the need to use a fax machine to transmit new orders due to automatic transmission of these orders by the digital pen. This is time that the facility can invest in
an increased level of resident care.
